Competition Rules
Official rules and regulations for ICN bodybuilding competitions.
Important Notice
All competitors must read and agree to these rules during registration. Rules are subject to change. Check back regularly for updates
Membership & Entry
- Premium Membership Required: Athletes must be Premium Members and agree to ICN 365 random drug testing. Join via icompetenatural.com. Membership is annual.
- Minimum Age: Membership accepted from age 15.
- Entry Process: Athletes must enter before the event; on-the-day entries are not generally accepted unless a promoter approves. Online entry via the ICN Member Portal is an application to compete; ICN reserves the right to refuse or withdraw applications at its discretion.
- Membership Refunds: Refunds are rare and only considered if the member hasn’t yet competed, with an admin fee and formal written request.
Australian Eligibility & Representation
- Competition Eligibility: To compete at Australian Titles, athletes must be citizens or hold a work/residency visa.
- National Representation: Only Australian citizens or long-term residents (last 5 years) can be titled Overall Mr/Ms Australia and represent the country internationally.
- International Invitations: Rules explain how invitations to the Australian Titles may be granted in rare cases for international athletes.
Drug Testing & Natural Standards
- Zero Tolerance Policy: Strict testing and zero-tolerance anti-doping policy to protect clean competition.
- Visible Signs of Drug Use: Visible signs of drug use are treated as a major fault; judges will mark those competitors down significantly.
- Refusal to Test: Refusing tests or failing for serious substances may lead to lifetime bans. Cheating on drug tests is treated as severe misconduct.
- Muscle Implants: Competitors with muscle implants/injections are not eligible to compete.
- Trophy Return: All competitors receive a trophy; positive tests require returning it.
Divisions & Categories
- Division Merging: A division may be merged with another if there are fewer than three competitors.
- Category Restrictions: Certain division combinations may be restricted (e.g. Bikini vs Fitness, Figure vs Bodybuilding, Men’s Physique vs Bodybuilding) at promoter discretion.
- Proof of Age: Age-restricted divisions (teen/junior/senior) may require ID at check-in.
- Full Division List: For complete division list and descriptions, see the Divisions & Categories pages.
Attire & Presentation
- Posing Bikini and Men’s Trunks: No restrictions on colour or design (style is free, within decency and federation standards).
- Stage Presentation: Professional conduct required at all times. Athletes must manage their own stage readiness and timing.
Judging & Scoring
- Judging Panel: Always an odd number of judges; judging is subjective but guided by ICN criteria.
- Head Judge Authority: The Head Judge can request additional poses or movements to better compare physiques. Decisions are final (except in doping disqualification cases).
- Trends & Interpretation: Trends and local preferences may influence how looks are interpreted, but all decisions are final.
- Feedback: Competitors can request judges’ feedback after the event through official channels.
Competition Day Procedures
- No Show Policy: Failing to appear for trophy presentation counts as a “No Show” and results in last place.
- Schedule Changes: Promoters can alter the running order and schedule as needed.
- Photography: A professional photographer is contracted so athletes can later purchase stage images.
Pro Qualification
- PQ Card (Pro Qualifier Card): Gives top amateurs access to PRO shows in that calendar year. They retain amateur status until they win a PRO division.
- Limited Pro Cards: Pro-cards are limited to keep PRO status prestigious while still enabling strong PRO line-ups.
- International Qualification: Certain pinnacle events require qualification; international athletes may enter via the portal if their country has no qualifier.
Misconduct & Penalties
- General Misconduct: Misconduct can cause score deductions or suspension from future events.
- Severe Violations: Serious misconduct, especially related to drug testing, may result in lifetime bans.
Affiliate Members
- Sanctioned Events: ICN may sanction events not directly run by ICN. Affiliate Members are bound by ICN rules and doping policy from joining until results are made official.
- Testing at Affiliate Events: A positive test at a sanctioned event triggers the same penalties as within ICN’s main doping policy.
Prizes & Awards
- Prize Structure: ICN aims to offer strong prizes; state winners may be awarded trips to national events, and national winners may earn travel awards to international shows.
- Trophies: All competitors receive a trophy acknowledging their achievement.
